Pokémon Team Import & Export Guide: Showdown, Paste, and Share
How to import Pokémon teams from Showdown, export teams from Metamons, share team links, and move teams between builders without losing moves, EVs, or sets.
Competitive Pokémon builders & analysts
The Metamons team builds the competitive team-builder and Pokédex behind this site. We play Smogon singles and VGC doubles across Gen 1–9 and cross-check every guide against live usage data before publishing.

You found a great team on a Smogon forum. You built one yourself in the Metamons builder. You want to play it on Showdown, or you want the AI coach to check a team someone shared with you. Moving teams between platforms should be one click — and it is, once you know the format.
This guide covers every import and export workflow on Metamons.
Exporting from Metamons to Pokémon Showdown
The most common workflow: build or refine a team in Metamons, then play it on Showdown.
Step-by-step
- Finish your team in the Metamons team builder. Confirm all six slots have moves, EVs, ability, item, and nature.
- Click the Export button (top-right of the builder).
- The export modal shows a text block in Showdown format. It looks like this:
Gholdengo @ Air Balloon
Ability: Good as Gold
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Make It Rain
- Nasty Plot
- Recover
Great Tusk @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Headlong Rush
- Ice Spinner
- Rapid Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Click Copy to clipboard.
- Open Pokémon Showdown.
- Go to Teambuilder → New Team → Select your format (e.g., [Gen 9] OU).
- Click the Import/Export tab at the top.
- Paste the copied text and click Save.
Your team is now playable on Showdown. The format, all stats, all moves, the Tera Type, and the EV spread transfer exactly.
What exports correctly
| Field | Exported? | |-------|-----------| | Species | Yes | | Item | Yes | | Ability | Yes | | Tera Type | Yes (Gen 9 only) | | EVs | Yes | | Nature | Yes | | Moves (all 4) | Yes | | IVs | Yes (defaults to 31, 0 IV spreads export correctly) | | Level | Yes (defaults to 100 for Smogon, can be changed) |
What does not export
- Format/tier selection. You must select the correct format manually on Showdown. The export text does not include format metadata.
- Nicknames. Metamons does not set nicknames by default. You can edit them on Showdown after import.
- Shiny flag. Not included in the export. Set it on Showdown if you want the alternate sprite.
Importing teams into Metamons
You can import teams from Showdown, Smogon forums, Discord, Reddit — anywhere the standard Showdown export format is used.
Step-by-step
- Copy the team text. It must be in Showdown import/export format (see the example above).
- Open the Metamons team builder.
- Click the Import button.
- Paste the team text into the import modal.
- Click Import.
Metamons parses species, ability, item, moves, EVs, nature, IVs, Tera Type, and level from the text. Your six slots populate automatically.
Supported import formats
Metamons accepts the standard Showdown export format. This is the format used by:
- Pokémon Showdown (Teambuilder → Import/Export)
- Smogon forums (RMT threads, sample teams)
- Pikalytics (team export)
- Poképaste (paste links)
- Reddit / Discord (any Showdown paste)
The parser handles minor formatting variations:
- Spaces vs tabs between field name and value (both work)
- Missing fields (ability, item, EVs, Tera, IVs — all optional, builder fills defaults)
- Multiple teams in one paste (only the first six Pokémon are imported)
- Nicknames (parsed, stored, and included on re-export)
- Gender markers (M/F — parsed and preserved)
Troubleshooting broken imports
"Species not recognized" The import parser couldn't match a Pokémon name. Showdown uses specific names: "Blissey," not "blissey" (case is fine, but spelling must be exact). For formes, use "Landorus-Therian," not "Landorus-T" or "Lando-T." Check the Pokédex on Metamons for the exact species name.
"Move not found" A move name didn't match the PokéAPI database. Common issues: "Stealth Rocks" (plural — should be "Stealth Rock"), "Will-o-Wisp" (should be "Will-O-Wisp"), or a move that doesn't exist in the format's generation.
"Ability not valid for this Pokémon" The import found an ability that this species cannot have. Hidden Abilities are gated by format generation. "Speed Boost Blaziken" imports fine in Gen 5+ but fails in Gen 3-4 where Speed Boost didn't exist.
Partial import If one Pokémon fails to parse, the remaining five import normally. The failed slot stays empty. Check the error message on the failed slot for the specific field that broke.
EV overflow If the paste has more than 510 total EVs or more than 252 in a single stat, the builder caps the values at the legal limit and shows a warning.
Sharing teams from Metamons
The Share feature generates a permanent link to your team.
Step-by-step
- Build your team in the team builder.
- Click Share.
- Copy the generated URL.
Anyone with the link can view:
- All six Pokémon with full sets (moves, item, ability, EVs, nature, Tera)
- The type coverage heatmap
- The AI coach analysis (if you ran it before sharing)
Shared teams are read-only. Viewers cannot edit your team but can import it into their own builder session with one click.
When to share
- Rate-my-team posts. Share the link on Reddit (r/stunfisk), Smogon RMT forums, or Discord instead of pasting six long text blocks.
- Coaching. Send the link to a more experienced player and ask for feedback on a specific matchup.
- Team showcase. Share successful teams you've laddered with.
- Tournament prep. Share your tournament team with practice partners before the event.
Moving teams between guides and the builder
Every guide on Metamons links directly to the team builder. When a guide references a specific team — like the three lineups in the best Gen 9 OU teams guide — you can:
- Open the team builder in a separate tab.
- Manually add the six Pokémon from the guide.
- Or, if the guide provides a Showdown paste block, copy and import it directly.
