AI Pokémon Team Rater: How AI Analyzes Your Competitive Team
How the Metamons AI team rater evaluates your Pokémon team on type coverage, speed tiers, role balance, and threat matchups — and what to fix after the AI flags a weakness.

Most teams don't lose because the Pokémon are bad. They lose because nobody looked at all six slots at once before the match started. A team rater is that second look — a structured audit that catches the gaps you stopped noticing while you were building.
Metamons does this in two layers. The type-coverage math is deterministic: the 18-type defensive heatmap computes resistances, weaknesses, and immunities from the type chart, with no estimation involved. The AI coach adds the reasoning layer on top — roles, threat matchups, and set quality — grounded in your paste and PokéAPI-backed species facts. The coach is instructed to flag uncertainty instead of inventing exact damage rolls or usage numbers, so you can trust that a finding is either computed or clearly labeled as a judgment call.
This guide covers what the Metamons AI team rater checks, how to read its output, and how to turn a rating into actionable fixes.
What the Metamons team rater checks
Type coverage
The builder scans all 18 attacking types and marks which ones your team cannot resist and cannot hit super-effectively. This part is computed, not guessed: if a type shows as a gap, none of your six Pokémon resists it, period. The most common gap in OU right now is Ground — too many teams run three or more Ground-weak Pokémon with no immunity. A gap on Ground means Earthquake from any strong physical attacker chips or KOs the whole roster.
The type coverage guide walks through the theory, but the heatmap on the builder page shows your team's current gaps live as you add each slot.
Speed tiers
The AI compares your Pokémon's base Speed (from the PokéAPI-backed facts it receives with your paste) against the common benchmarks for your format. It won't invent an exact opposing EV spread — it's instructed not to fabricate precise numbers — but it will flag the structural problems: a whole team under base 100 with no speed control, or a sweeper that loses the mirror against the tier's most common fast threat. For exact EV math, the speed tiers guide lists the benchmarks so you can do the arithmetic yourself.
Role balance
A team with three sweepers, one wall, and two wildcards usually collapses against anything with a plan. The AI checks whether your six slots cover the core roles — lead, physical wall, special wall, wallbreaker, sweeper, pivot — and tells you which slot looks redundant or missing. See the team roles guide for what each role is supposed to do.
Threat list
The AI reasons through the top threats of your selected format and reports which ones your current six look unprepared for — with the caveat that this is strategic judgment, not a computed verdict. For example, if your team has no Ground move and no strong special attacker, the AI flags that Garganacl walls you completely. That's the most valuable output: it surfaces the losses you haven't taken yet.
How to use the Metamons AI team rater
The Metamons team builder includes a built-in AI coach that rates your team on every field above. The workflow:
- Pick your format. Select OU, UU, VGC, or any supported tier. The AI adjusts its advice to that format's mechanics and threat pool.
- Add your six Pokémon. Search the Pokédex, pick from presets, or import a Pokémon Showdown export.
- Run "Rate my team". The coach returns a scored review covering coverage gaps, speed issues, role balance, and the threats worth investigating.
- Fix the flagged problems. Swap one slot, adjust an EV spread, or change a Tera Type based on the recommendation.
- Re-rate. After each change, run the rating again and confirm the gap is closed.
Common problems the AI flags — and how to fix them
Here are the issues the Metamons rater catches most often and what to do about each one.
"Your team is Ground-weak with no immunity"
Fix: Add a Flying-type or a Pokémon with Levitate. Landorus-Therian covers Ground and adds pivot utility. Rotom-Wash covers Ground plus Water, giving you two answers in one slot.
"Your team loses to Dragapult"
Specs Dragapult with Shadow Ball outspeeds almost everything in the tier and hits most of the meta for neutral damage. If the AI flags it:
Fix: Add a fast Dark-type (Choice Scarf Roaring Moon), a specially bulky Normal-type, or a Fairy-type that can tank a Shadow Ball and KO back. Priority Sucker Punch from Kingambit also works.
"No special wallbreaker"
Physical walls like Dondozo and Toxapex sit on teams that lack special pressure. If the AI flags this:
Fix: Add a strong special attacker. Gholdengo with Nasty Plot, Volcarona with Quiver Dance, or Specs Walking Wake all break through physical walls.
"Your team has no hazard removal"
Entry hazards chip your team every switch. If the AI flags this:
Fix: Add a Defogger or Rapid Spinner. Great Tusk spins and threatens. Corviknight defogs and pivots. Pick whichever fits your defensive core.
AI team rater vs. manual analysis
You can do all of this manually with the Smogon dex, a speed tier spreadsheet, and a type chart. It takes 30-45 minutes per team. The Metamons rater runs the deterministic coverage check instantly and gives the AI layer the same paste and species facts you'd use yourself.
The real advantage isn't speed — it's the second set of eyes. Humans forget to check one type. They round a Speed stat wrong. They overlook a niche threat that happens to wall the entire team. The rater doesn't, because the type math is exhaustive and the coach reviews the roster as one unit rather than six separate cards.
